Aerospace and defence company Airbus has delivered its first US-assembled A220 aircraft to US carrier Delta Air Lines from Mobile, Alabama.

The manufacturer opened Mobile A220 Final Assembly Line in January 2019, which was followed by official production of the programme in August the same year.

Airbus has been training approximately 400 US employees on A220 production in Mirabel, Quebec, Canada.

Airbus Americas chairman and CEO C Jeffrey Knittel said: “The delivery of the first US-built A220-300 is a historic moment that highlights Airbus’ growing industrial footprint in North America and makes us all extremely proud.

“We look forward to seeing passengers delighted by the experience of travelling onboard this brand new A220-300 proudly built in Mobile, Alabama.”

With a total of 95 A220 aircraft on order, Delta Air Lines is one of the largest customers for the programme. It will also be the first A220 operator of both A220-100 and A220-300 aircraft types in the US.

The A220 reduced noise footprint by 50% compared with previous generation aircraft, 25% lower fuel burn per seat and 50% lower NOx emissions than industry standards. In January, flag carrier Air Canada became the first Airbus A220 operator in the country after an unveiling ceremony at the airline’s Montreal headquarters.

In a separate development, the Hisdesat-owned and operated SPAINSAT NG programme has passed the preliminary design review (PDR) of the payload and the complete satellite, including PDR of Pacis 3 (PPP) aspects.

SPAINSAT NG is being manufactured by a consortium of four co-primes from Airbus, and Thales Alenia Space in Spain and France.
