During the Covid-19 pandemic, Auckland Airport in New Zealand has requested that passengers only come to the airport when their international flights are confirmed to depart in three hours.

Even though flights are continuing to land and leave the airport, flight schedules are constantly changing due to the border restrictions being put in place to limit the spread of the infection.

On 20 March, the airport saw a 20% decrease in arrivals and departures of flights and a 44% decrease in international passenger traffic on 16 March, compared to the same days last year.

Auckland Airport stated that its terminal staff are following the guidelines given by the Ministry of Health and are advising travellers to follow social distancing protocols between other passengers in the arrivals and departures areas.

Auckland Airport general manager operations Anna Cassels-Brown said: “Auckland Airport is focused on maintaining our operation so Kiwis can get home, and overseas travellers can get to where they need to be.

“The international terminal is extremely busy, and we are asking people to consider whether it’s really necessary for them to come into the building.”

Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the airport has stopped using its volunteers, called the Blue Coats.

The volunteers aid the airport by staffing the help desks in both international and domestic terminals.

To safeguard the health and safety of passengers and staff, the airport has boosted the cleaning frequency in the terminals, focusing on the toilet areas and family change facilities.

The cleaning measures adhere to the Ministry of Health standards. The airport has also installed hand sanitisers in its terminals.
