Technology firm CLEAR has launched its biometric scanning service at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM) in the US with the aim of accelerating security checks.

The company’s services are currently used by around 3.8 million passengers.

The new technology will enable CLEAR members to move through the security checkpoint with the touch of a finger or blink of an eye.

CLEAR executive vice-president for corporate affairs Howard Kass said: “Today’s launch is an important step toward making travel stress disappear from ‘The Magic City’.

“We’re excited to open here in Birmingham and proud to have created 25 new jobs, which will enhance the BHM experience and help support the local community as well.”

The company’s biometric scanning services for air passengers are available for a monthly fee of $15, which can also be paid annually.

Customers also have the option to add up to three more family members for an additional $50 per year.

Children under 18 can use the kiosks for free when they travel with a CLEAR member.

Birmingham Airport Authority president and CEO Ronald Mathieu said: “Our goal at BHM is to provide passengers an easy and convenient travel experience.

“We are happy to partner with CLEAR as we are committed to enhancing and elevating every customer’s experience at our airport.”

In May, CLEAR deployed its biometric technology at Boston Logan International Airport in New England, US.

The company also installed its biometric security lanes at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) last December.

Terminal 4 at New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport partnered with CLEAR to introduce biometric scanners at the facility in November 2018.
