As per the contract, Gammon will deliver two 1,800m-long eight-cell tunnel structures for both systems, along with electrical and mechanical works.

It will also build many support buildings such as pumping stations, a data centre and security facilities.

These tunnels are part of the Three Runway System (3RS) project, which will permit the travellers to move between the expanded Terminal 2 and new Third Runway Concourse.

The work on the project will be carried out with modular solutions for most of the electrical and mechanical works.

This is in line with Balfour Beatty’s aim to reduce on-site activity by 25% and is expected to boost health and safety, increase productivity and decrease the work duration.

Gammon CEO Thomas Ho said: “We are delighted that Airport Authority Hong Kong has chosen Gammon to deliver this key element of the 3RS works.

“Through our technical and innovate approach, we will ensure the productive and efficient delivery of the automatic people mover and baggage handling system, contributing to the expansion of Hong Kong International Airport to meet future air traffic growth and maintain Hong Kong’s competitiveness as an international aviation hub.”

The project will see the involvement of around 1,500 people in its construction peak.
