Xinhua news agency reported that the passengers used their smartphones to indicate their negative Covid-19 test results at a check-in counter before taking a flight to New York.

Developed by the Commons Project Foundation, the new app displays the traveller’s Covid-19 test results or vaccination record.

This helps airline staff or border security to confirm that the individual is at low risk of transmitting Covid-19.

The Commons Project Foundation said that it intends to roll out the digital platform in countries for a more trustworthy approach that validates the health status of arriving travellers.

Testing a digital health passport is claimed to be the first in Japan and the ‘CommonPass’ app is one of a number of digital health passports being tested around the world.

This initiative helps to digitalise passengers’ coronavirus test results and vaccination status, which in turn helps airlines and authorities to speed up immigration procedures at airports.

ANA corporate planning senior vice-president Juichi Hirasawa said: “Our trials of the CommonPass Health application will help us to ensure that these procedures will enable us to simplify international travel while also protecting passenger privacy.”

Besides ANA, seven more airlines, including flag carrier Japan Airlines (JAL), are also aiding in the CommonPass digital certificate trials.
