Mexico-based airline Aeromexico has announced plans to run its first flights between the US and Mexico utilising sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), as part of the International Day of Climate Action.
This initiative is expected to lower 27t of carbon emissions, which is equivalent to making over 3,800 cars zero-emission for a day in Mexico City.

The flights, including a Boeing 737-800 aircraft featuring GE/Safran CFM56 engines, will leave from San Francisco to Guadalajara and Mexico City.
Nearly 40,000l of sustainable fuel produced from waste animal fats and vegetable oils, along with Jet-A jet fuel, have been procured from renewable fuels producer and supplier Neste Company, to support these trips.
This green fuel enables airlines to cut down their greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80%.
Numerous flights used SAF to fly between Mexico and Costa Rica under the Green Flights campaign in 2010.

By GlobalDataIn the following year, the first transatlantic flight operated with SAF between Mexico and Madrid.
In 2012, Aeromexico ran a flight to São Paulo for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development RIO+20.
In a statement, Aeromexico said: “Aeromexico is one of the most innovative airlines in the market since it continually invests in modern aircraft, equipped with lean-burn combustion technologies and high propulsive efficiency. As a result, the company has reduced by up to 25% fuel burn. This reinforces the commitment for future SAF operations in collaboration with GE and Safran.”
Additionally, the airline is running a voluntary emissions compensation programme, Vuela Verde.
Under this initiative, customers and employees can make donations while purchasing their airline tickets for offsetting their flight carbon footprint.
Aeromexico utilises these proceeds in certified socio-environmental projects.
Aeromexico sustainable project planning manager Maria Dolores Paradis said: “Reducing CO₂ emissions is part of our sustainable strategy to combat climate change. For more than a decade, we have had a fuel efficiency programme that has reduced around 270,000t of CO₂, equivalent to the circulation of 105,000 cars per year in Mexico City.”
In 2019, Aeromexico integrated WorldTracer, a baggage tracing and matching system from information technology company SITA, with its passenger chatbot.
