Aegean Airlines is set to power up to 62 Airbus A320neo family aircraft with GTF engines supplied by aerospace manufacturer Pratt & Whitney.

The engines will be used for 30 firm, 12 option, and up to 20 leased aircraft.

Additionally, Pratt & Whitney will provide engine maintenance to Aegean through a long-term EngineWise Comprehensive service agreement.

Aegean Airlines chairman Eftichios Vassilakis said: “We selected the Pratt & Whitney GTF engine to provide our passengers with the newest and most advanced technology available for our new Airbus aircraft.

“The GTF will serve us and our customers with the most economical and environmentally friendly power available on the market today.”

The airline’s fleet of 49 V2500-powered A320ceo family aircraft already uses Pratt & Whitney engines.

Shareholders in the consortium include Pratt & Whitney, Pratt & Whitney Aero Engines International, Japanese Aero Engines, and MTU Aero Engines.

Olympic Air, the airline’s subsidiary, also operates 12 PW100-powered regional Turboprop aircraft at present.

The GTF engine, which entered service in early 2016, is capable of reducing fuel burn by 16%, and NOx emissions by 50%, while lowering the noise footprint by 75%.

Aegean signed a purchase agreement with Airbus in June, for an order of up to 42 new generation A320neo family aircraft.
