Construction has finished for Abu Dhabi International Airport’s Midfield Airside Road Tunnel (MART), connecting the Midfield Terminal Building with the southside terminals, T1 and T3.

The tunnel will provide a means of transit to vehicles, including passenger and crew buses, baggage transfer services, and ground services equipment. It is 1.16km long with an average overall width of 35m.

Abu Dhabi Airports acting CEO Abdul Majeed Al Khoori said: “Today’s achievement is a key milestone towards delivering an airport hub that can sustain growth for years to come.

“It is crucial to have efficient connectivity between all of the airport’s terminals once the MTB is operational, to ensure we deliver a highly functional gateway, utilising all available resources and infrastructure at its highest operational capabilities.”

The southern part of the tunnel section under the south runway was completed in December 2014 as part of the construction’s first phase.

The second phase linked phase one construction with the airside towards Terminals 1 and 3, including the full MEP installation for the entire project. This created a fully operational network of road tunnels.

Al Khoori added: “The MART project is a very complex one being carried out in a live and extremely busy airport environment, alongside a mega project being built. Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity and thank all teams that were involved within Abu Dhabi Airports and its stakeholders, as, without the joint efforts and unified goals, this project wouldn’t have been achievable.”
