Springfield Airport Authority board chair Frank Vala stated:  “Today, we continue our efforts to rebuild and modernise major airport facilities to better serve our local aircraft owners and operators, commercial airline passengers and visitors to Springfield.

“These improvements will provide a first-class front door to our community for those visitors utilising the general aviation terminal.”

The expansion plan involves complete rehabilitation of the fixed base operator (FBO) facility’s main hangars and the relocation of the general aviation terminal building.

“Exterior structural, roofing, insulation, painting and lighting improvements will also be carried out at other corporate hangars and at Lincoln Land Community College’s LRS Aviation Center.”

Hangars will be equipped with new roofing, sidewalls, ceilings, modern lighting, heating systems and high-performance floor finishes.

Additionally, the terminal area will be shifted between the two main hangars. It will feature a flight planning room, pilot lounge, conference facilities, café / canteen area, passenger waiting lounge, customer service counter, line operations office, maintenance and catering support facilities.

Exterior structural, roofing, insulation, painting and lighting improvements will also be carried out at other corporate hangars and at Lincoln Land Community College’s LRS Aviation Center.

The project’s total investment is worth $7.9m, which will be financed with general obligation bonds and commercial debt serviced with future lease payments.

All construction work is scheduled to be completed by next year and will be carried out by Halverson Construction of Springfield.

Roadway and parking lot improvements include integration of Parking Lots A and B to offer sufficient space for 225 additional cars.

Plans also include construction of a new dedicated entrance, which will give access to the newly renovated FBO complex for general/business aviation users.
