The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is reportedly planning to purchase 198 body scanners, which will be deployed at 63 Indian airports.
Officials stated that the scanners will replace the current door frame metal detectors and hand-held scanners.

The process to buy the body scanners commenced earlier this year before the Covid-19 outbreak.
PTI reported that 19 scanners will be deployed at Chennai International Airport, 17 at Kolkata International Airport and 12 at Pune International Airport.
AAI officials stated that, due to the pandemic, it is imperative to procure the body scanners to limit the frisking of passengers by security personnel.

By GlobalDataAn official said: “Seven body scanners (out of the 198) will be deployed at the Srinagar airport, six at the Visakhapatnam airport, and five each at airports in Tirupati, Bagdogra, Bhubaneswar, Goa and Imphal.”
Amritsar, Aurangabad, Bhopal, Calicut, Coimbatore, Gaya, Trichy and Varanasi airports will receive four body scanners each.
India resumed domestic passenger flights on 25 May after all flights were suspended in March due to the Covid-19 lockdown.
It had been operating repatriation flights and had set up bilateral air bubbles with the US, the UAE, France and Germany.
In February, India’s Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman announced that 100 additional airports will be developed in the country by 2024.
Last October, AAI planned to monetise 759 acres of land near eight major Indian airports.
