The north-east UAS Airspace Integration Research Alliance (NUAIR Alliance) and Griffiss International Airport in Rome have collaborated with Unifly to visualise and manage drone traffic in the airspace of New York.

The partnership will focus on offering improved enhanced unmanned traffic management (UTM) capabilities for the NY UAS Test Site 50-mile UTM Corridor, which is currently being constructed.

Belgium-based Unifly provides a unique software application that facilitates UTM systems in very-low-altitude airspace. Its tools inform operators where it is safe and legal to fly and allows authorities to track traffic and manage airspace.

In addition to informing users about the complex rules and situations, the new solution provides validation for a given flight and location.

Upon establishing its presence in Central New York, Unifly will deploy its software platform and support traffic management testing.

“This partnership presents a unique opportunity to share Unifly’s proven UTM technology and experience with NUAIR.”

Additionally, Unifly in collaboration with NUAIR will support enhancements to test beyond visual line of site (BVLOS) systems. Its ultimate goal is to safely integrate UAVs into the US airspace.

Unifly CEO Marc Kegelaers said: “This partnership presents a unique opportunity to share Unifly’s proven UTM technology and experience with NUAIR.

“The NUAIR Operation Centre is the first test site that has had the vision to include international partners in their global alliance to successfully tackle these global challenges.”

The latest move comes after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo allocated $30m in October last year to develop the 50-mile flight traffic management system between Syracuse and Griffiss International Airport.

NUAIR Alliance CEO Marke Gibson said: “This new partnership will provide the critical tools needed for beyond visual line of site testing; capabilities not found at any other test site in the nation.

“It also shows that this region is able to lead the industry and attract partners from across the globe due to investments being made by New York state.”
