New year, new regulations: AIR 75 out now!

In this issue: new EU travel regulations, ultraviolet cleaning technology, the new app combatting wildlife smuggling, and much more.

By Peter Nilson

A new year is upon us, and after a difficult 12 months, the aviation sector is as optimistic as ever for a bounce back to something near the levels of ‘the before times’, despite an unsettling Omicron-flavoured spectre looming over airports and airlines.

Whether you are on an iPad, desktop or smartphone, you can read the magazine for free online.

This issue, we hear from some of the industry leaders as they give their predictions for the trends we’ll see taking hold in 2022, both for airlines and airports. We also highlight how new ultraviolet technology is being implemented to help keep airports clean – a particularly high priority due to obvious pandemic-related reasons. We also learn about a new app that is helping airport and airline staff combat wildlife trafficking in aviation.

And, as you would have seen already, our cover story this month dives into the new EU regulations coming into effect this year. The bloc’s long-awaited travel and information authorisation scheme is due to roll out this year, but what exactly does it entail? We find out all about it.

In this issue

Inside the EU’s new travel information and authorisation scheme

With the aviation industry up and running once more after facing many setbacks brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic, the EU is preparing to roll out new travel rules that include fingerprint checks. Frankie Youd explores these new regulations.

Airports go blue: ultraviolet cleaning systems

Although it was never lowest on airport managers’ priorities, hygiene and cleanliness has become a higher priority for passengers in the wake of the pandemic. Jasleen Mann profiles some new ultraviolet technologies hoping to clean up airports.

Wildlife Sentinel app aims to combat wildlife smuggling

Non-government organisation TRAFFIC has developed a mobile reporting app, designed to encourage the aviation industry to combat the increasing issue of wildlife trafficking. Frankie Youd speaks to Katrina Mole, project manager at TRAFFIC, to find out about the development.

If 2021 taught us anything, it’s that airports can adapt to change and overcome obstacles presented by the Covid-19 pandemic via the introduction of new tech, cleaning protocols, and passenger processing. With the new year now upon us, Frankie Youd asks what changes we might see in airports in the coming year, and Jasleen Mann hears from industry experts as they give their predictions for the airline trends we can expect in the coming year.

Next issue preview

Across the globe, airlines and airports are frequently subject to delays caused by plane pushback approval, bird strikes, weather conditions, and more. If not reported in due time these incidents can result in angry passengers and complications.

In our next issue, we speak to start-up UnDelay about its solution to this issue, combining AI and machine learning to process hundreds of radio conversations and allowing airports and airlines can see if a flight will be delayed – before the delay is reported.
