US-based construction and civil engineering company Bechtel has secured a new contract to manage the development plan of London City Airport in the UK.

As part of the project, the existing terminal facilities will be expanded in addition to creating a new airfield infrastructure.

The new airfield will have the capacity to accommodate an additional 30,000 permitted flight movements.

The newly expanded airport will be able to handle up to 6.5 million passengers by 2025 while ensuring a smooth and secure service to the existing passengers.

London City Airport CEO Declan Collier said: “The appointment of Bechtel signals the next important step towards the start of construction on this significant development.

“Their expertise and experience will ensure that the programme is delivered responsibly, professionally and skillfully, while the airport remains operational.”

Under the terms of the five-year delivery partner contract, Bechtel will work as part of an integrated team with airport officials to deliver the development programme.

The programme involves the construction of a new three-storey passenger pier, seven new aircraft stands and a new taxi lane.

Bechtel UK managing director Paul Gibbs said: “Delivering London City’s expansion in an operational, urban airport surrounded by water, presents complex challenges that our team can meet.

“We will partner with London City to enhance this important gateway with minimum disruption to passengers, airlines and the community.”

Over the last ten years, the company has managed more than 40 major airport projects.
