The Polish Air Navigation Services Agency (PANSA) has successfully deployed Germany-based Comsoft Solutions’ wide area multilateration (WAM) network to enhance surveillance coverage for an extended area around Gdansk, Poland.

The WAM capabilities are provided by Comsoft Solutions’ ultra-compact remote Quadrant sensors and interrogators linked to a Quadrant Central Processor.

Designed to use multilateration technology to detect and locate aircraft, Comsoft Solutions Quadrant provides full Mode S surveillance capabilities, including improved surveillance, to PANSA.

In addition to supporting air traffic with existing Mode A/C technology, the WAM system supplements the existing radar in the central region and expands coverage into areas that are not fully covered by the current radar in Gdansk.

"After certification and final audit the WAM system in Gdansk is fully operational and we are wholly satisfied with the system in terms of communication."

With WAM’s flexibility, the coverage can be extended further by adding new sensor sites. The installed systems also feature ADS-B capability, which could be put into operational use in the future.

The surveillance system is integrated with an interrogation management technique that secures the secondary surveillance radar’s radio frequencies against overuse by using only minimum interrogation rates and power for each aircraft.
