The Board of Commissioners of the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey has approved $54.4m to redevelop Runway 4-22 and associated taxiways at LaGuardia Airport in the US.
The 7,000ft-long and 150ft-wide runway will be rehabilitated to extend its useful life and ensure compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards.

Work on the project will be carried out during airport closures at night time and extended weekend runway closures in order to minimise the impact on aircraft operations.
Port Authority of New York & New Jersey chairman John Degnan said: “Continued investment in LaGuardia’s infrastructure is necessary to maintain operational safety and achieve higher levels of efficiency.
“This project highlights the Port Authority’s long-term commitment to maintain state-of-the-art facilities that offer a seamless travel experience.”
The project will see the milling and asphalt concrete overlay of Runway 4-22 and its associated taxiways, along with new pavement markings, guidance signs and the replacement and modernisation of runway and taxiway lighting systems in line with FAA requirements.

“This investment is part and parcel of our significant investment to redevelop LaGuardia Airport and ensure that it can accommodate continued passenger growth.”
Last year, LaGuardia Airport carried out approximately 370,000 aircraft operations and handled more than 29.8 million passengers.
Besides extending its useful life, the redevelopment of Runway 4-22 will help improve safety and reduce delays.
Work on the project is slated to begin in August this year and is expected to be completed in 2021.
