Allegheny County Airport Authority has unveiled plans for a $1.1bn modernisation and upgrade project of the Pittsburgh International Airport in the US. 

The major plan involves development of a new landside terminal adjacent to the refurbished airside terminal with 51 gates.

The airport overhaul will help reduce long-term costs, enhance passenger experience and develop amenities in line with the modern day demands. 

Furthermore, the modernisation project will include development of an expanded security checkpoint, installation of a newly configured international arrivals process, implementation of advanced technology across the airport terminal and incorporation of an improved baggage delivery system. 

Also, the plan includes construction of a new parking garage.

The redesigned terminal will help increase concession revenue opportunities both before and after security.

Allegheny County Airport Authority CEO Christina Cassotis said: "We are excited to make this Pittsburgh’s airport, a facility that is optimised for the needs of the local passenger and today’s aviation environment. 

"This facility gives us the ability to truly make this the gateway to our region and continues our ascent as industry leaders.

The project is expected to provide more than 10,000 direct and indirect job opportunities, create $1.66bn in economic activity, and generate more than $28m in state and local income taxes. 

The upgrade plan will enable the airport to be optimised for modern security needs and will help reduce its annual operating and maintenance costs. 

Work on the project is expected to start in 2019 and will be completed in 2023.
