US Transportation Security Administration (TSA), together with Delta Air Lines, has launched new automated security screening lanes in Terminal C at LaGuardia Airport (LGA) in New York City, US.
The new screening system is equipped with advanced technology that helps improve effectiveness while reducing the time customers spend in security screening.

Terminal C at LaGuardia currently features two automated screening lanes, while four additional lanes are slated to be launched in Terminal D over the coming weeks.
TSA federal security director at the airport Robert Duffy said: “The new automated screening lanes offer several features designed to improve the screening of travellers by automating many of the functions previously conducted manually, which allows travellers to move more swiftly and efficiently through the checkpoint.”
The automated lanes are equipped with multiple divesting stations that allow many passengers to step up to conveyor belts and drop their personal property at the same time.
The automated conveyor belts draw bins into the X-ray machines before returning them to passengers.

By GlobalDataThe bins are said to be 25% larger than those at standard checkpoints, meaning they can contain roller bags.
A second conveyor belt is also featured for carry-on bags, and generates alarms to warn security personnel of potential threats.
Unique radio frequency identification (RFID) tags are attached to each bin to facilitate additional accountability of a passenger’s items as they move throughout the security process.
In addition, the checkpoints are fitted with cameras to take a photograph the contents of each bin, which can be placed side-by-side to the X-ray image of a bag’s contents.
In May, TSA installed two new automated security screening lanes in Terminal 8 at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).
