The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is set to ban drone flights within the lateral boundaries of several national landmarks in the country.

The federal agency has responded to the request of US national security and law enforcement agencies regarding potential threats related to unauthorised drone operations over ten Department of the Interior (DOI) sites.

The national sites include the Statue of Liberty National Monument, Hoover Dam and the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial.

From 5 October, drone operators will not be allowed to fly unmanned aircraft up to 400ft within the lateral boundaries of the sites.

Drone pilots who violate the airspace restrictions might be subject to enforcement action, including potential civil penalties and criminal charges.

However, there are a few exceptions under which operators would be allowed to fly their drones within these ten restricted sites and such flights require coordination with the individual facility and / or the FAA.

The current ban will add to the existing restrictions imposed by the FAA for US military sites.
