Indra collaborated with navigation service provider DFS Aviation Services to ensure a safe transition.

The project to upgrade the control centre was initiated during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Indra said that the new centre would enable the safety and fluidity of aircraft movements across the Arabian Gulf and on some major routes that connect Asia, Europe and Africa.

The firm also agreed to transform the previous control centre into a modernised backup facility that can take over air traffic control when needed.

Indra Middle East ATM director Jesús Fernández Ocaña said: “Bahrain currently has one of the most efficient and safest skies in existence. Its new air traffic control centre is ready to continue to expand and incorporate the new technologies that will emerge in the coming years.”

Last month, Indra received a contract to deliver and deploy air navigation systems across 17 African airports.

The contract will see the firm delivering its Normarc instrument landing system (ILS) and distance measuring equipment (DME) at the airports.
