UAE’s flag carrier Emirates has reached a biometric data agreement with the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai (GDRFA) to expedite international visitor processing at Dubai International Airport (DXB).

The agreement is said to be the first of its kind globally.

It is expected to facilitate passenger traffic procedures inside Dubai International Airport Terminal 3 and provide a faster experience for passengers transferring to connecting flights and those who arrive in Dubai.

Emirates chief operating officer Adel Al Redha said: “Emirates continually invests in improving customer experience, and we thank the GDFRA for extending the bridges of cooperation, communication, and coordination to add value to Emirates’ services and allow our international passengers to Fly Better.”

Biometric recognition technologies and GDRFA pre-populated biometric database will be used to identify passengers at various points in the airport.

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology will help detect passengers’ facial features and connect them to their passports for identity verification.

This service was previously offered only to UAE residents and GCC nationals.

Beginning next year, international passengers will be able to use this service by giving their official consent using the Emirates app or in person at Emirates check-in desks or self-check-in kiosks. 

GDRFA Dubai director general Mohamed Ahmed Al Marri said: “Dubai is one of the world’s most aspirational destinations, and 2022 has already seen more than eight million tourists arrive in the city.
