Birmingham Airport (BHX) in the UK has initiated works for a new security screening area within the existing terminal building.

The new facility is being built with an aim to facilitate a faster, simpler pre-flight security screening process for passengers at the airport.

Entailing an investment of more than £20m, the new security screening area is said to align with the UK Government directive.

This directive requires all the airports in the country to adhere to new standards by 1 June 2024, which is also the deadline for the project’s conclusion.

Once completed, the new facility will have the capacity to offer screening services to nearly 18 million passengers annually and more.

BHX in its 2018 master plan highlighted its goal to increase annual customer volumes from 12 million to 18 million by 2033.

The project is also expected to support economic growth in the West Midlands region.

Construction firm Tilbury Douglas will execute the works, and initially, will set up site compounds prior to progressing on the project itself.

Birmingham Airport terminal operations director Al Titterington said: “We are seizing this as an opportunity to improve our operation and, crucially, the customer experience we offer at BHX.

“Installing our Next-Generation Security (NGS) system will deliver a speedier and simpler pre-flight screening process capable of serving significantly more passengers per hour at peak times.”

To accommodate the new screening area, restaurant brands including Burger King and Frankie & Benny’s have been shuttered.

Earlier this month, BHX implemented Veovo’s Intelligent Airport Platform to modernise its airport management and aeronautical billing system.

The technology is said to allow quick decision-making for the airport operator and its aviation partners.
