The runway can no longer be used, according to the Ukrainian military.
The new runway was formally launched in July last year after ten years of design and construction period, stated Odesa city mayor Gennadiy Trukhanov.
“Thanks to the new runway we were expecting a colossal influx of tourists from all over the world. Instead, we got a rocket strike,” he was quoted as saying on Facebook by Reuters.
Speaking about the attack on Telegram, Odesa regional governor Maksym Marchenko said that no one hurt in the attack, which was caused by a Bastion missile.

Russia has not commented on the rocket strike.
In his address, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said: “The Odesa airport runway was destroyed. We will, of course, rebuild it. But Odesa will never forget Russia’s behaviour towards it.”
Russia has been subject to several sanctions by western nations for launching its military attack on Ukraine at the end of February 2022. Since then, several countries including the EU, Canada, and US have closed their airspace to Russia.
As a retaliatory move, Russia too shut down its airspace to ‘unfriendly’ nations.
In March this year, the UK government tightened its pressure on Russia by criminalising the entry of Russian aircraft into its airspace.
Earlier this month, Ukraine’s Dnipro airport was destroyed in a rocket strike by the Russian military.
The attack injured five employees of the state emergency service.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Vnukovo International Airport and Sheremetyevo International Airport have started furloughing employees due to the decline in passenger volume.
