Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) technology provider LanzaJet has collaborated with Marquis Sustainable Aviation Fuel to set up a 120 million gallons per year integrated sustainable fuels plant in the US.
The two parties have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in this regard.

This plant will generate SAF and renewable diesel by utilising low-carbon intensity (CI) feedstocks through the LanzaJet Alcohol-to-Jet process.
In addition, the production of SAF will use on-site carbon capture and sequestration and renewable energy.
This facility will be situated on a 2,500a industrial site near the Illinois River in Marquis Industrial Complex in Hennepin, Illinois.
Benefitting from its strategic location, the production centre is expected to supply green fuel to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW).

By GlobalDataLanzaJet CEO Jimmy Samartzis said: “This demonstrates the opportunity for the US to produce meaningful volumes of sustainable aviation fuel at scale, transitioning feedstocks from the production of traditional biofuels into sustainable aviation fuel. SAF from existing sources alone could replace more than 50% of US fossil jet fuel use.
“The key is low carbon intensity, where existing infrastructure is paired with carbon capture and sequestration and renewable energy. Marquis is doing exactly this and makes for a great partnership with LanzaJet.”
Marquis SAF CEO Mark Marquis added: “LanzaJet’s ATJ technology will be fully integrated into our sustainable fuels plant with a focus on producing sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel.
“In addition, we are making investments in carbon capture, corn kernel fibre technology, and utilising Marquis’ proprietary ProCap system for the production of high protein feed and renewable corn oil in this new state-of-the-art facility. This will enable us to lead the decarbonisation of the transportation sector in the years to come.”
Recently, LanzaJet announced plans to develop its first plant in Georgia, which is projected to start commercial operations in 2023.
This facility will utilise low-CI, sustainably certified ethanol generated from waste sources and current energy crops.
SAF’s production made from low carbon intensity corn, in collaboration with Marquis, is slated to commence engineering this year.
In October last year, Manchester Airports Group entered a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Fulcrum BioEnergy Limited UK to enable direct SAF supply for Manchester Airport (MAN).
