Ontario International Airport (ONT) in the US has handled nearly 478,000 passengers in July this year, representing 97% of the total passenger traffic recorded in July 2019.

This figure stands 171% higher than the passenger count of July 2020 amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to data from the Ontario International Airport Authority (OIAA), the airport managed more than 462,000 domestic passengers last month, indicating a 167% increase compared with July last year.

Nearly 15,600 international passengers moved through the airport in July 2021, marking a 333% increase compared with the same period of last year.

The recorded number of domestic passengers in July 2021 was 1.2% lower than July 2019 while international passenger traffic witnessed a drop of 42%.

During the first seven months of this year, ONT handled more than 2.1 million travellers, around 70% of the total figure recorded over the first seven months of 2019 and 40% more than the same period of 2020.

In July 2021, the airport’s air freight shipments were 66,400t, which is 6% higher than the same month of 2019, but 17.2% lower than July 2020.

OIAA board of commissioners president Alan D. Wapner said: “Ontario International’s recovery from the impact of the pandemic continues at a robust pace.

“Airlines are showing great confidence in our airport and our strong customer base as the demand for air travel, particularly domestic service, approaches pre-pandemic volume.”

Separately, Schiphol Airport (AMS) in the Netherlands handled almost three million passengers in July 2021.

In July 2020, the airport recorded 1.3 million passengers while nearly 6.7 million passengers moved through the airport in July 2019.

The number of cargo flights was 1,854, a 9% increase in transported tonnage as against last year and a 1% growth compared with 2019.

This July, the airport, in collaboration with Wageningen University & Research and the Netherlands Aerospace Centre, carried out research for improving local air quality by minimising the number of ultrafine particles.
