Japan’s Narita International Airport (NRT) has announced its plans to install new automatic disinfection equipment (UV modules) for its security checkpoints at all terminals.

As part of the project, nearly 62 Smiths Detection UV disinfection modules will be incorporated in the security lanes.

Around 27 modules will be deployed at international security screening checkpoints in Terminal 1, 22 in Terminal 2 and 13 at international and domestic security screening checkpoints in Terminal 3.

The new equipment will feature a shielding mechanism that will conform with international standards to prevent UV light leakage from outside the module.

During the return of inspection trays, the solution will automatically throw UV light for a few seconds on the trays for eliminating 99.9% of pathogens on both sides of the trays.

The deployment of the equipment will begin from November and is anticipated to be finished by the end of fiscal 2021.

In a statement, the airport said: “We will continue to take thorough and effective countermeasures against virus infection so as to be prepared to offer peace of mind to passengers as their numbers increase with the coming recovery of travel demand.”

Narita Airport claims to be the first airport in the country to secure an international certification for applying Covid-19 counter infection measures.

In March, the airport announced that it would commence a trial operation of shoe screening equipment.

The new devices would be deployed and tested for automatically spotting banned items without the need for passengers to take off their shoes.

NRT stated that the trial results would be applied to make the airport more secure, reliable and comfortable.
