Chicago Rockford International Airport (RFD) in the US and Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN) in Germany have signed a cooperation agreement to boost air cargo traffic between the two regions.

The two airports will support the joint air cargo reach and share knowledge.

The airports will work together on initiatives for developing the management of e-commerce cargo handling systems.

The joint goals of the airports include reducing on-ground challenges, involving additional cargo airlines and moving the products swiftly to their final destinations.

Furthermore, RFD and CGN have agreed to provide support to the present cargo clients by assessing procedures and processes.

The partners aim to reduce logistics firms’ delivery times and optimise ground and cargo handling.

RFD executive director Mike Dunn said: “The pronounced similarities between our two airports provide a springboard for us to move forward proactively and efficiently to positively impact business, continued economic development and job growth in our regions. With our goals aligned, together we can enhance services and capabilities benefitting our cargo customers.”

CGN president and CEO Johan Vanneste said: “With the cooperation agreement between Chicago Rockford International Airport and Cologne Bonn Airport, we will establish a regular communication and exchange platform.

“The aforementioned exchange will not only include airport operations, aircraft handling and cargo handling, but also security, marketing and sales, as well as air cargo and e-commerce market development.”

Last year, RFD handled around 383,915mt of air cargo, whereas CGN’s annual air cargo throughput was around 863,000mt.
