El Dorado International Airport in Colombia has partnered with data analytics and technology firm DTN for the installation of a weather alerting system to ensure airport operations safety.

DTN will equip the airport with its MetConsole LiDAR Windshear Alerting System (LiWAS), which can track winds threatening the safety of aircraft and humans.

In addition, the airport’s current automated weather observation systems (AWOS) will be completely integrated with the new solution.

Aeronautical Meteorology systems general coordinator Alejandro Reina said: “For Aerocivil, El Dorado airport is not only a benchmark in Colombia, but also in all of South America. The El Dorado airport must use the most avant-garde systems in order to offer maximum security and confidence to their passengers, scrupulously complying with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) recommendations.”

The company claimed that the airport will be the first in South America to invest in such an advanced system.

The new system will provide advanced weather analytics, helping pilots to quickly detect and dodge dangerous winds, such as windshear, an unexpected change in wind speed or direction, which is hazardous for the aircraft during take-off and landing because of time and space movement constraints.

Developed on MetConsole, an aviation weather suite by DTN, LiWAS has been installed at more than 350 airports globally.
