The construction of the new terminal is a part of an ongoing expansion project at the airport. The project also involves building a new apron and air traffic control (ATC) tower.

In addition, the expansion work includes building the associated taxiways, control room and supporting equipment rooms, as well as the installation of terminal radar and radar simulation equipment, among others.

An isolation bay will also be created to make the airport capable of handling five wide-body (code-E) and ten narrow-body (code-C) aircraft.

Overall, the project is estimated to cost Rs9.51bn ($129.7m).

The new terminal will boost Trichy Airport’s passenger handling capacity. The 75,000m² facility will be capable of processing up to 2,900 passengers during peak hours.

It will feature 48 check-in counters and ten boarding bridges.

Notably, AAI undertook the construction of the new building after the existing integrated passenger terminal, which is used for domestic and international operations, exhausted its design capacity.

Recently, AAI started the construction of a new greenfield airport in Hollongi in the state of Arunachal Pradesh. The project entails an investment of Rs6.5bn ($88.7m).

Once complete, the airport will be able to handle 200 passengers during peak hours.
