Airports Council International (ACI) World has released new Covid-19 security guidance to be implemented at airports as they prepare for operational restart.

The guidelines, published in a report named ‘Aviation Smart Security Playbook’, were  developed in partnership with Deloitte.

The report is expected to help the airports provide a safe and hygienic travel experience for passengers and staff amid the global ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

They are also aligned with the recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council Aviation Recovery Task Force (CART), which outlines a recovery roadmap for air travel.

The guidelines provide practical solutions that are expected to ensure operational readiness for airports as they prepare for an increase in passenger traffic.

The guidance provided by ACI World focuses on ‘pre-security measures, security and control measures, primary security considerations, passenger expectations, and the creation of decision framework for control measures’.

ACI World director general Luis Felipe de Oliveira said: “As airports around the world restart operations, providing important connectivity and essential operations, their primary focus is on protecting the health and welfare of passengers and staff, as well as to minimise the opportunities for dissemination of disease.

“The entire aviation ecosystem is adjusting to the complexities of the ‘new normal’ and responding to the needs and expectations of passengers is crucial in rebuilding confidence that air travel is safe.

“Aviation will be a key engine driving the long-term global economic recovery from the effects of Covid-19 and these guidelines are intended to assist airports during the initial phases of business restart, as well as the longer-term recovery process.

“Our collaboration with Deloitte on this guidance is an example of the collaborative approach, which will be key to this sustainable recovery.”

Last month, ACI World released its Smart Security Vision 2040, offering its vision for seamless airport security screening operations in the post-Covid-19 era.
