Malaysia Airports has completed the rehabilitation of the third runway (Runway 3) at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) following comprehensive maintenance work.
The work was carried out under the KUL Runway Sustainability Master Plan, which is an important framework to ensure the safety of flight operations at the airport.

Malaysia Airports group CEO Mohd Shukrie Mohd Salleh said that the work was carried out despite cost-cutting initiatives amid the Covid-19 pandemic, which has affected aviation industry operations.
Salleh added: “We will never compromise on the safety aspects of airport operations. Now more than ever, we have to be able to reassure the travelling public that air travel is safe.
“On top of ensuring safety of flight operations, we have also invested in technology that can provide a contactless and sanitised airport environment so that our guests can have peace of mind when they need to travel.
“The completion of rehabilitation works on Runway 3 is especially timely as we are starting to see a gradual increase in confidence on the safety of air travel.

The renovations mainly included cover work and improvement of runway surface drainage.
During this period, Malaysia Airports held regular contact meetings with all stakeholders, including the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM), airline partners and KUL ground handling personnel to ensure smooth flight operations.
Following the completion of the maintenance work, the CAAM performed calibration and inspection work to evaluate the infrastructure readiness and ensure that the runway adheres with international safety and regulatory guidelines for operation of aircraft.
This January, Malaysia Airports opened the newly refurbished immigration arrivals hall at Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2).
