Phuket International Airport in Thailand has expanded its Covid-19 virus screening for travellers from Cambodia.

Thailand’s airports have announced the decision after passengers of the Westerdam cruise ship arrived into the country.

On 14 February, Westerdam passengers disembarked at Cambodia after being turned away by five countries over the fear of Covid-19.

Before leaving the ship, officials tested 20 people on board for the coronavirus and the results came back negative.

Cambodia has one confirmed case of Covid-19 without any deaths so far.

The arriving passengers from the Westerdam cruise ship were screened and did not exhibit any symptoms and were permitted to continue their journey.

An 83-year-old American passenger from the cruise ship tested positive for coronavirus in Malaysia on 16 February. Her 85-year-old husband tested negative for the virus.

This prompted the country to prohibit passengers and crew onboard the ship from entering the country.

Thai Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has asked airlines to not issue boarding passes to the cruise ship crew and passengers for the next 14 days.

In addition, Thai health authorities are planning to carry out coronavirus screenings for passengers from Singapore and Japan.

Singapore has reported 77 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, while Japan has 66 cases, excluding the 542 cases on the Diamond Princess cruise ship quarantined in Yokohama.

Earlier this month, Thailand increased thermal health screening at its international airports for patients who may have been infected with the coronavirus.

Thailand has 35 confirmed cases of the coronavirus with no deaths so far.
