More than 7.7 million passengers travelled through London’s Heathrow Airport, UK, in August this year, representing an increase of 0.1% compared to last year.

Statistics have revealed that 262,000 passengers travelled through the the airport on 4 August, making it Heathrow’s busiest day in history.

Passengers from Africa increased by 6% as a result of increased aircraft sizes on flights to Nigeria and a new route to Durban, South Africa.

Domestic connections increased by 2.7% from last year.

Data also showed that over 126,000mt of cargo passed through Heathrow, the UK’s largest port in value.

Africa and the Middle East recorded the highest cargo growth, with an increase of 4.2% and 1.8% respectively.

A public consultation event was held last month on the airport expansion plan, giving local communities a chance to learn about the project and its impacts.

In June, Heathrow invested £50m ($61m) in computed tomography (CT) scanners.

The UK Department for Transport disclosed plans to implement the technology in all major UK airports.

Heathrow CEO John Holland-Kaye said: “We are continuing to invest in future proofing Heathrow. The airport will be a testbed for groundbreaking technology like our new CT scanners to ensure that our passenger experience remains world class as numbers continue to grow.

“Using new technology and innovation as we deliver expansion will also demonstrate our global leadership on sustainable travel.”
