The contract means Porr will be responsible for the overhaul of the 3.5km long ‘Piste 2’ runway at Henri Coanda International Airport.

Porr Construct said in a statement: “Porr has thereby secured its fourth large-scale contract for airfield construction in Romania, reflecting the popularity gained Europe-wide from specialising in runway construction.

“This is just the latest confirmation of the construction company’s role as a leader in airfield construction. In addition to projects in Romania, recent runway overhauls have been successfully completed at Cologne Airport in Germany and Salzburg Airport in Austria.”

The contract also involves milling off the asphalt from the existing concrete surface and overhauling the concrete runway. The runway will also be newly resurfaced with asphalt.

Porr will replace the rainwater drainage system, along with the entire electrical fittings and lighting system.

The upgrades are planned to be carried out in three phases.

During the works on the first 950m section, the runway will initially be operational, before closing to air traffic for 40 days so the middle section can be upgraded.

The ‘Piste 2’ runway will be reopened once this has been completed and the remaining 1,090m section resurfaced.

Henri Coanda International Airport is currently one of two airports serving Bucharest and is managed by Compania Nationala Aeroporturi Bucuresti.
