Ontario International Airport (ONT) in California, US recorded an 8% increase in passenger and cargo volumes in May 2019.

According to figures released by the Ontario International Airport Authority (OIAA), more than 475,000 airline passengers travelled through ONT in May, an increase of 8.3% over the corresponding month last year.

OIAA said that domestic passenger volume increased by 7.5% to more than 449,000, while international travellers grew by around 25% to over 26,000 in May.

ONT handled more than 2.1 million passengers during the first five months of 2019, nearly 6% more than the 1.9 million handled during the corresponding period last year.

Domestic travellers also increased to more than 1.9 million, up by 3.4%, while international travellers increased by 72% to nearly 122,000.

Similarly, ONT recorded a 7.8% increase in cargo shipments last month at over 68,000t of freight and mail, compared to more than 63,000t in May last year.

Cargo volume increased by 4.4% to more than 301,000t from January to May this year.

OIAA chief executive officer Mark Thorpe said: “Customer confidence continued to be strong in the run-up to the summer travel season.

“Our airline partners are adding new flights and expanding their ONT services is evidence that Ontario airport is indeed an attractive international gateway for air travel and freight movement.”

Ontario International Airport is a full-service airport located 35 miles east of downtown Los Angeles in the centre of Southern California.

ONT offers non-stop commercial jet services to 21 airports in the US, Mexico, and Taiwan, as well as connecting services to several domestic and international destinations.

OIAA was formed between the City of Ontario and the County of San Bernardino and provides direction for the management, operations, development, and marketing of ONT for the benefit of the Southern California economy and the residents of the airport’s four-county catchment area.
