Western Sydney Airport in Australia has shortlisted five architectural teams to take part in a design competition for its terminal.
Design Inc and Foster and Partners, Cox and Zaha Hadid, Woods Bagot and RSHP, Hassell and Pascall Watson, and a group bid consisting of Architectus, Gensler, SAA, and Surbana Jurong have been invited to participate in the design competition.

The teams were selected from over 40 parties and were required to have been involved in at least three major airport or aviation projects in the last ten years. One of the participating companies on each team needed to be permanently based in Australia.
The selected teams will now create their vision for an integrated international and domestic terminal that will also feature a transport interchange and a plaza.
Western Sydney Airport CEO Graham Millett said: “There are so many factors that will have to come together in the design to ensure our customers have a seamless experience in an enjoyable environment.
“From the moment they arrive at the airport, through check-in, security, and customs, to the boarding gate, we want every stage to be stress-free.

Construction of Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport has also reached a major milestone, having moved a mammoth one million cubic metres of earth on site.
Western Sydney Airport has also signed a memorandum of understanding with Qantas and Virgin Australia, which will provide insights into the airport’s design process.
The selected team will be required to have a vision for the airport to be developed in various stages.
Stage one will include a 3.7km runway and facilities for up to ten million passengers annually. Further stages will accommodate a projected 82 million annual passengers by 2060.
The winning design is expected to be selected by the end of 2019. The airport is scheduled to open in 2026.
