Funding has been awarded through the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Airport Improvement Program (AIP) and the US Department of Transportation (DOT). It will be used for the completion of phase two of the airport’s runway rehabilitation project.

Oneida County executive Anthony J Picente Jr said: “Receiving this federal grant will enable Griffiss International Airport to complete phase two of its runway rehabilitation project, which includes improvements to its surface and lighting.

“This project will continue to make Oneida County’s airport an elite facility. I want to thank our federal representatives for helping secure this funding and for always being a champion of Griffiss and our region.”

The FAA-administered AIP grants are used for the development of public-use airports included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS).

Improvements to the Griffiss runway are being carried out as a three-phase project.

In June last year, Griffiss International Airport was awarded $7.5m to fund much of phase one of the runway project.

Senator Schumer said: “Keeping our airports in top-notch shape is crucial to safe travel for area residents and in attracting business and tourism to Oneida County and the entire Mohawk Valley.

“These federal funds will allow Griffiss International Airport to make improvements to its runway, including the construction of new lighting, boosting the safety and operations for those that fly in and out of the airport.”
