China has conducted test flights at the new $11.5bn Daxing International Airport in Beijing.

The airport is located 46km from the city and is expected to relieve pressure from the overcrowded Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA),  which is considered to be one of the busiest airports in the world.

Daxing International Airport is situated at the junction of Daxing district and Langfang city, which is in the Hebei province of North China.

The full construction process at the airport is expected to completed by the end of June, while a low visibility flight test will be undertaken in August. Commercial operations at the airport will commence by the end of September.

The airport will have seven runways and an annual passenger handling capacity of up to 45 million by 2021. Passenger handling capacity is expected to increase to 72 million by 2025, reported CGTN.

Boeing and Airbus planes of China Eastern Airlines, Air China, China Southern Airlines, and Xiamen Airlines took part in the test.
