As per the modernisation plan of the airport’s domestic terminal T3, which was initially announced in December last year, the airline has started replacing and installing new software.

The upgrades will enable passengers to quickly check-in, print boarding passes and baggage tags. Additionally, the airliner will install new service pods and service desks.

The majority of the automatic bag drop facilities will be installed by the end of 2018, which will considerably reduce congestion and enable travellers to quickly move through the check-in and bag drop process.

“We’re taking a phased approach to construction, so proactive communications will be sent to all passengers travelling during those periods advising that it’s best to check-in online.”

Virgin Australia Airlines group executive Rob Sharp said: “Melbourne is one of our busiest hubs with over 100 return flights operating each day, and it’s imperative we have the infrastructure to support that.

“We’re taking a phased approach to construction, so proactive communications will be sent to all passengers travelling during those periods advising that it’s best to check-in online via the website or the Virgin Australia App, and to arrive at least 60 minutes prior to their flight departure.

“There will also be extra ground crew stationed in the check-in hall over the next few months to assist passengers with the process if they require.”

Scheduled to become operational by mid-next year, the redesigned terminal will incorporate a Premium Entry facility for travellers flying in business class together with Platinum and Gold Velocity Frequent Flyer members.

Additionally, the passengers will be provided with dedicated areas for check-in, bag drop and security screening and direct access to the Virgin Australia Lounge.

Melbourne Airport aviation chief Simon Gandy said: “It marks the commencement of the broader development plans we have with Virgin Australia for Terminal 3 and importantly, it integrates with the wider development works underway throughout the airport.”
