Wellington Airport in New Zealand has commenced preliminary demolition work prior to an upgrade of the airport’s main terminal building.
The renovation is estimated to cost N$15m ($10.11m). It will focus on about 6,000m² of the public space in the main terminal on level one, which is equal to the size of 12 basketball courts. The work is expected to be completed over the next 12 months.

The preliminary demolition works include redistributing two large air conditioning units from the main terminal’s level one into the ceiling space at the airport.
Commenting on the redevelopment, Wellington Airport chief commercial officer Matt Clarke said: “The upgrade will transform the airport’s main terminal to a light, open space where travellers can intuitively find their way to and from their flights.”
“Our recent extension of the southern part of the terminal gives a flavour of what’s about to come. The refreshed space with brands like Best Ugly Bagels has been welcomed by the public and this next phase will build on that. Passengers want to see the best of global and local brands reflected in their airport.”
The airport believes that the facelift will enable Wellington brands and other established retailers to create retail and dining experience for travellers.
