Construction company Swinerton has opened the new Terminal 2 Parking Plaza at San Diego International Airport in the US.

Team members of Swinerton from Orange County, San Diego and Los Angeles partnered with the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, Watry Design, and Gensler as a design-build team to complete the plaza.

The structure will serve as one of the gateways to the airport.

San Diego International Airport president and CEO Kimberly Becker said: “We understand that convenient, close-in airport parking is a core customer service need, and we address that need with this beautiful new facility.

“Opening ahead of schedule and in time for the busy summer travel season, the Parking Plaza features smart parking technology and integrated public art for an enhanced overall parking experience.”

Designed to offer a fast, safe and convenient passengers experience, the Parking Plaza provides easy vehicle circulation using its latest parking guidance systems that direct customers quickly to the nearest available open space.

Overall, it is capable of providing approximately 1,700 new close-in parking spaces to the airport.

Offering one-million square feet across three storeys, the Parking Plaza is capable of parking more than 2,900 cars.

The project also features off-site improvements, such as utility relocations, car park reconfigurations and connection into the existing airport campus.

Swinerton project executive Chris Murphy said: “Swinerton is proud to have completed the Terminal 2 Parking Plaza on time and under budget in a strong partnership with the San Diego International Airport.

“The progressive design-build contracting method used on the project allowed us to deliver maximum value to the airport rapidly and efficiently.”

The environmentally sustainable building of the plaza features extensive natural lighting, energy-efficient fixtures, and a stormwater reuse system.
