Nanaimo Airport (YCD) in Canada has initiated an infrastructure project for the expansion of its Air Terminal Building to improve passenger comfort, efficiency and safety.
As part of the $15m project, an extra 14,000ft2 will be added to the terminal building, which is estimated to increase its size by about 60%.

In addition, the security area will be expanded to facilitate quick baggage checks and the capacity of the departure lounge will be doubled to house approximately 320 seats.
The works will be carried out by Nanaimo Airport Commission in collaboration with the federal and provincial governments, which provided $2.48m each.
Nanaimo Airport board chair Lucie Gosselin said: “We are ten years ahead of passenger forecasts and this investment will help us expand to ensure we continue to deliver great service to our customers.
“The Nanaimo Airport Commission appreciates the support provided by the Government of Canada and the Provincial Government for public infrastructure projects, through the New Building Canada Fund – Small Communities Fund Program.”

By GlobalDataIn addition to meeting traveller’s needs, the expansion is expected to enhance tourism and economic growth, and support the airport’s long-term goals. It is set to be completed in 2020.
Nanaimo Airport CEO and president Mike Hooper said: “We have carefully planned this expansion to ensure we continue to provide exceptional customer experience during the construction period.
“By expanding we’ll be better able to meet the needs of our region today and for the next generations.”
The airport estimates that more than 390,000 passengers will utilise its services this year.
