The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is set to invest Rs12.32bn ($193m) for the construction of a new integrated international terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport.

The new terminal will be spread across a 90,000m² area at Guwahati in the Indian state of Assam.

With the capacity to handle 3,100 passengers at peak hours, the new terminal will conform to Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA) 4-Star rating.

It will feature 64 check-in counters, 20 self-check-in kiosks, and 16 self-baggage-drop counters, as well as eight immigration and customs counters.

The terminal will also have six arrival luggage carousels, 20 aircraft parking bays, as well as ten escalators and 25 elevators.

Plants will be incorporated into the design of the terminal’s city side to highlight the culture of the north-eastern region of India.

Other green features of the project include a solid waste management system, reuse of treated water for flushing and horticulture purpose, rain-water harvesting and use of efficient water fixtures.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbanada Sonowal said: “Guwahati, the largest city of Assam and north-east of India, and one of the fastest growing cities in India is on its way to transform into a smart city.

“The new airport being constructed by AAI will surely meet the futuristic demands of Guwahati and will further add to the infrastructural development of this expanding city.”

The investment is also expected to help improve the state’s connectivity with South East Asian countries.
