The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in the US has approved $496m for major landside and airside projects at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).

The latest move forms part of the ongoing $2.3bn Terminal A redevelopment programme. The projects were approved by the authority’s board of commissioners.

Financing is expected to advance the programme that involves the development of a new one million square feet terminal and 33 aircraft gates. An improved roadway network and 3,000 parking spaces will also  be created as part of the programme.

The Port Authority authorised extensive paving work and the milling of existing pavement, the demolition of buildings and associated structures, installation of a new drainage system, as well as taxi lane lighting and new curbing.

The construction of four new bridge structures was also approved by the authority.

Scheduled for a partial opening in 2021, the new passenger terminal will be fully operational by 2022 and will have the capacity to accommodate 13.6 million passengers annually.

Approved in March, the redevelopment programme is expected to create 10,390 jobs and generate $3.93bn in regional economic activity.

Furthermore, an additional $250m was authorised for two new projects associated with the terminal redevelopment.

A total of $175m will be used to pave 40 airside acres and create aircraft parking positions, while $75m has been allotted for foundation work on a new terminal frontage to accommodate a future AirTrain alignment.

Commenting on the approvals, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey vice-chairman Jeffrey Lynford said: “Today’s authorisations will help accelerate a programme that everyone agrees is vital to the airport’s future success.”

Another $8m was allocated to evaluate the feasibility of consolidating all rental car facilities at the airport.
