LFV has signed an agreement with airport operator Swedavia to establish air traffic services (ATS) from a remote position at Kiruna Airport, Umeå Airport, Åre Östersund Airport, and Malmö Airport.
LFV is claimed to be the world’s first Swedish air navigation service provider (ANSP) that incorporates ATS from a remote position, also referred to as remote tower services (RTS).

In April 2015, a remote tower centre in Sundsvall was opened for air traffic management (ATM) of Örnsköldsvik Airport from a remote location.
Last year, LFV and Swedavia also signed a letter of intent (LoI) to investigate the preconditions for ATS from a remote position at some of Swedavia’s airports.
Swedavia president and CEO Jonas Abrahamsson said: “Innovation and digitalisation are important elements for the further development of airport operations.
“The preliminary study that was conducted shows improvements in both technology and coordination, as well as efficiency improvements, which are made possible by a remote-controlled air traffic control (ATC).”

By GlobalDataA joint remote tower centre will be located at Sweden’s Stockholm Arlanda Airport in connection with LFV’s current ATC centre.
LFV director general Ann Persson Grivas said: “RTS is a good example of how LFV works with smart solutions for tomorrow’s aviation.
“With the establishment of ATS from a remote position at four more airports, Sweden and LFV continue to be world-leading in digitalisation for air traffic navigation services.”
LFV currently operates as the air traffic controller at 20 airports from three ATC centres in Sweden.
