The China Harbor Engineering Company (CHEC) has secured a $138m design and construction contract from the Government of Guyana to expand Cheddi Jagan International Airport’s terminal and lengthen its runway.

CHEC, which is funded by China Exim Bank, will extend the runway to 10,800ft to allow it to accommodate large transatlantic aircraft such as the Boeing 747, construct a new terminal building and acquire eight boarding bridges to handle additional traffic.

As part of the contract, the company will also install equipment such as elevators, escalators, x-ray scanners using 3D technology, and flight information and security monitoring systems.

According to the operator, once the project is completed, the airport will become a hub for regional and continental traffic.

The construction and operation phases of the airport will also boost the local area’s economic activities and employment opportunities.

Guyana has secured a $138m loan from the Chinese and Guinean governments and said that revenues from Cheddi Jagan International Airport’s expanded facilities will go towards repaying the loan.

CHEC has also won contracts from the Ministry of Transport and Works and the National Works Agency of Jamaica for two infrastructure projects – the Palisadoes Shoreline Protection and Rehabilitation Works, and the Jamaica Development Infrastructure Programme.

In addition, CHEC is building a new terminal and runway at Sri Lanka, and is carrying out works at Macao International Airport and Chek Lap Kok Airport in Hong Kong.
