Frankfurt Airport in Germany reported a 12.2% rise in passenger traffic to 4.35 million during December 2011, compared with the same month in 2010. The airport’s maximum take-off and landing rates climbed by 12.3% to 38,326, whereas the maximum take-off weight rose by 5.6% to 2.29 million tonnes.

Fraport executive board chairman Stefan Schulte said that the inauguration of Frankfurt’s new runway had a very positive effect on traffic development, and showed how important capacity investment was for the positive further development of the airport.

Airfreight volume at Frankfurt dropped by 6.5% to 167,970t when compared with the figure for December 2010.

For the entire year, Frankfurt Airport’s passenger traffic increased by 6.5% to 56.44 million year-on-year, aircraft movements rose by 4.9% to 487,162, and maximum take-off weight climbed by 4.6% to 29.25 million tonnes.

Even after reporting gains in 2010, Frankfurt Airport’s airfreight sector felt the impact of the slowdown in the global economy during 2011, with its airfreight throughput slipping by 2.8% to stand at 2.17 million tonnes.

Fraport’s majority-owned foreign airports served 96.63 million passengers in 2011, marking a 9.1% year-on-year rise, and its aircraft movements soared by 7.1% to 816,330.

The group’s Antalya Airport in Turkey reported a 12.7% rise in passenger traffic to 24.96 million, and Lima Airport in Peru served 11.8 million passengers, up by 14.7%. The airport’s Bulgaria Black Sea gateway of Burgas Airport served 2.25 million passengers, an increase of 19%, while Varna Airport recorded a 3.7% drop in traffic to 1.18 million passengers due to the closure of the airport in winter for renovations.

The Fraport Group’s majority-owned airports registered a 11.3% rise in passenger traffic to 5.82 million in December 2011, compared with the same period in 2010.
