Smiths Detection president Mal Maginnis said the new baggage screening system will boast an enhanced combination of size capability and throughput rate, further offering operators long-term value.

"It is designed specifically to meet the unique challenges faced by airlines and airports every day," Maginnis added.

Smiths Detection said that the larger tunnel size in the system allows screening of bigger bags, while the system can screen 1,800 bags every hour with a belt speed of 0.5m a second.

The HI-SCAN 10080 XCT, which is expected to be ready for installation in late 2012, meets the checked baggage inspection requirements of the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) and US Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
