Smith Detection’s x-ray system, which includes HI-SCAN 6040aTiX, will screen hand-luggage for weapons and explosives, allowing the airport to handle the expected rise in passenger traffic during the Olympics Games.

The £20m Games Terminal will serve an estimated 10,100 athletes, as well an anticipated 35% rise in passenger numbers and baggage.

HI-SCAN 6040aTiX uses several independent multi-energy generators, which are connected to their own x-ray sensor technology and allow automatic explosives detection at airport security checkpoints.

According to Smiths Detection, the system generates two detailed views (Dual View) that allow authorities to carryout manual analysis and support the evaluation process.

The system is also equipped with advanced computer technologies to perform real-time analyses without obstructing the normal checkpoint processes.

Following the conclusion of the London Olympics, the systems will be installed at other BAA-operated airports.

Smiths Detection has also secured orders from Isle of Man authorities and the Highlands and Islands Airports, including Inverness, Dundee, Stornoway and Orkney, to supply x-ray scanners and trace and vapour explosive detectors.
