Bangalore International Airport in the Indian state of Karnataka has inaugurated a revamped terminal that can accommodate bigger aircraft such as the Airbus A380.

The new T1A spans 150,500m², which is double its existing area; it has been upgraded in its design, exteriors, facilities and infrastructure, while building on its strengths such as short walkways, linear flow and design.

The airport has the capacity to handle 20 million passengers annually.

There are 26 boarding gates, and 15 aerobridges, including one Code F contact stand for A380; a VIP terminal caters for the important people who arrive at the airport.

The new advanced airport operational control centre (AOCC) enables the airlines reduce their process time and make it more convenient for passengers, who have also been provided with additional immigration and emigration counters, check-in counters, seating areas, baggage reclaim belts and a larger security hold area.

The aerodynamic roof brings the old and the new parts of the terminal together; the artwork by award-winning artists and sculptors reflects the heritage of the state.

Bangalore International Airport managing director GV Sanjay Reddy said: "With T1A we want our passengers to experience everything that’s unique about Bangalore of yesteryears when he or she enters the airport and at the same time enjoy the benefits of world-class facilities."

In addition to the inauguration of the news terminal, the airport has been renamed as Kempegowda International Airport, after the founding father of Bangalore who was instrumental in planning and building the city.

An investment of Rs15bn (approximately $243m) was made in the development of the new terminal.
