London Southend Airport

Reading-based Photon Energy has completed the largest installation of solar panels in the UK at London Southend Airport, as part of a £10m terminal expansion by Kier Construction.

The airport, which recently crossed the one million passenger mark, said the 496 solar panels will provide clean solar electricity through the airport’s private electricity network to the terminal’s expanded range of shops, cafes and restaurants.

Installed on the terminal’s curved tunnel-shaped roofs, the panels were supplied to Integral by Conergy, which is a PV solution and service provider. Integral provided services related to the mechanical and electrical aspects of the terminal expansion.

The solar panels will enable the terminal to achieve a BREEAM Very Good environmental assessment rating, and avoid approximately 1,000t of carbon dioxide emissions over the next 20 years.

"The solar panels will enable the terminal to achieve a BREEAM Very Good environmental assessment rating."

London Southend Airport operations director David Lister said, "We are delighted to add the provision of clean solar electricity to a range of ‘green’ initiatives we’ve introduced as the terminal has developed.

"Environmentally-friendly initiatives are very important to us and the whole building has been designed to incorporate a number of them, including sustainable drainage, specialist coating to improve insulation, extensive glazing to enhance natural lighting and slow start escalators."
